“I like work: it fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours.” ― Jerome K. Jerome
There was a slightly odd interlude with the one I refer to as “the dude in the blue blazer” (did he even have one of those faux-heraldry blazons stitched onto his breast pocket? For the life of me I don’t remember but it wouldn't surprise me in the least. Do bankers do that?). I can’t even remember what bank he represented but we met him, once again, at our broker’s office on the outskirts of Tours. We had driven the 2 hours from Nantes and booked a hotel room for the night just for this meeting. We walked into the office and I was struck by two things: the deep darkness of the wintery night outside the large glass windows and this banker, his blue blazer, his neatly pressed, perfectly-creased khaki trousers, leather loafers, his thick head of dark movie-star hair, and a deluxe gold watch clamped to his wrist, a sign of his success, no doubt, which he was in the habit of toying with as he spoke.
